Message From Our Executive Director
One of the most pressing challenges of our time is the lack of awareness among rural communities of their legal rights and the power they hold to influence reforms within the legal and political systems. This "justice gap" fuels impunity, stifles human development, exacerbates conflict, and entrenches cycles of inequality and poverty.
The Challenge
Those in the most marginalized and fragile environments have the greatest need for legal protection and support, yet they are the least equipped to access it. Many are unaware that legal assistance even exists.
Our Mission
Legal education that empowers local communities is at the epicentre of our programming. For communities to safeguard their rights, they must first be aware of those rights and of the mechanisms available to enforce them.
The Regional Context
It is often said that "ignorance of the law is no defense." Yet across Eastern Africa, national laws are drafted in English, a foreign language for many, while courts and policy forums use frameworks and norms that are largely un-African. For most people, these laws and systems feel distant, unfamiliar, and inaccessible.

Our work is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 1 End Poverty, SDG 10 Reduce Inequality, SDG 13 Climate Action, SDG 15 Life on Land, SDG 16 Peace & Justice, and SDG 17 Partnerships. Without a legally aware and empowered population, the promise of sustainable development remains out of reach.
