Three areas of work across the Ateker region.
Protection and Promotion of Human Rights
Article 43 International defends the dignity and rights of communities historically excluded from state protection across the Ateker belt, from Kenya's Turkana to South Sudan's Toposa and Uganda's Karamoja. We build rights awareness, monitor abuses, and demand state accountability. We support community defenders, paralegals, and grassroots networks to challenge displacement, gender-based violence, extrajudicial killings, and the misuse of security power.
Advancing Constitutionalism and the Rule of Law
In the Ateker region, weak state presence has created a vacuum where informal norms and force often replace lawful authority. We strengthen constitutionalism through civic education, constitutional literacy, and dialogue between citizens and leaders on governance, justice, and accountability. By linking customary systems with national and regional legal frameworks, we promote inclusive governance that respects both law and culture.
Expanding Access to Justice
For many communities across the Ateker belt, justice remains a distant ideal. Courts are few, legal officers are scarce, and formal processes often alienate those most in need. We train and deploy grassroots paralegals, operate mobile legal aid clinics, and promote Alternative Justice Systems (AJS) - locally anchored models of dispute resolution that emphasize dialogue, reconciliation, and restorative justice.
